The Background
We worked very closely with Trammell Crow Company, a leading commercial property developer, and Knight Frank, the managing agent for The Welcome Building in Bristol. Designed by Darling Associates Architects, this innovative office space redefines the modern office environment, prioritising well-being, sustainability, and flexibility. It is a new type of workspace that offers the highest quality environment, featuring flexible working areas, a café, interactive art, and a collaborative business community.
Sustainability is at its core with the building being all-electric, powered by rooftop photovoltaic cells (PV) and operates at Net Zero Carbon. Aiming for the highest industry standards, The Welcome Building is the first Bristol office development to target WELL Platinum Certification, alongside BREEAM Outstanding. It has also achieved a NABERS Design for Performance Target rating of 5 stars, demonstrating its exceptional energy efficiency.
The Challenge
To complement The Welcome Building’s focus on sustainability and well-being, our project aimed to introduce a biophilic design that would improve air quality, boost productivity, and create a visually stunning workspace. The goal was to incorporate greenery efficiently into the architectural design while ensuring the plants thrive in an indoor environment.
The Solution
Our team implemented a vibrant green transformation, incorporating:
Six large live trees positioned at each corner of the floor area to create a striking visual impact.
Floor standing planters placed throughout the space to soften the environment.
Bespoke trough planters placed near seating areas create a sense of tranquillity and a connection with nature.
High-level planting on ceiling rafts, which gives lovely foliage at varied levels to enhance the building’s aesthetic.
The addition of biophilic design has transformed The Welcome Building into a thriving, nature-inspired workspace that promotes well-being, improves air quality, and enhances visual appeal. It also supports the building’s sustainability goals while creating a welcoming and inspiring environment for all.
“It was a great project to work on a brand-new, six-floor building, with two floors already occupied and a strong focus on sustainability.”
